Nylon filament yarn costs more than double polyester at the fibre. By the time it reaches your invoice as a finished backpack, the gap is about 8%. That collapse — from 165% to 8% — is the single most useful thing a wholesale buyer can understand about fabric choice, and almost nothing written about backpack materials mentions it.
This guide has been rebuilt on sourced price and test data. Two of the things we previously said here turned out not to survive checking, and we have corrected both rather than quietly deleting them — they are flagged in the text. Where a figure comes from a fabric vendor rather than an independent lab, we say so, because in this category a lot of what circulates as technical fact is marketing.
1. What the two fibres actually are
Nylon (polyamide) was the original technical fibre. Better strength-to-weight, more abrasion resistant at equal weight, more elastic. It is what premium outdoor and tactical packs are built from, usually as a branded weave such as Cordura. It absorbs roughly ten times more moisture than polyester, and it is made from caprolactam, a benzene derivative with tighter capacity and sharper price swings than polyester's feedstocks.
Polyester (PET) is the workhorse of promotional, school and commuter packs. It takes dye and sublimation beautifully, absorbs almost no water, and is cheap and abundant. It gives up abrasion resistance and tear strength at equal denier. It is the same polymer as a drinks bottle, which is why the recycled supply chain is mature.

2. The price gap, and where it disappears

Correction to what we previously published here. This guide used to say nylon fabric "runs roughly 20–40% above comparable polyester." At the fibre that is wrong by a wide margin. Expert Market Research puts nylon filament yarn at $2.52/kg against polyester at $0.95/kg in China in Q1 2026 — a 165% premium — and the gap holds at 116% to 135% across India, the USA and Germany. Same source, same quarter, so the ratio is comparable.
At the woven fabric roll the gap narrows sharply, to somewhere between +23% (500D Cordura against 600D polyester) and +90% (600D polyamide against 600D polyester Oxford), depending entirely on which two products you put side by side.
And then it narrows again.
A 25-litre daypack carries around 0.6 kg of fabric. At Q1 2026 Chinese fibre prices that is $0.57 of polyester or $1.51 of nylon — a difference of about $0.94. On a $12.00 FOB bag, specifying nylon instead of polyester moves your unit price by roughly 8%, not 165%.
What this means for you: the fibre premium is real but it is diluted by everything else in a backpack — hardware, linings, foam, webbing, zips, labour, overhead and margin, which together are most of the cost. If a supplier quotes nylon at 40% over polyester on an otherwise identical specification, the fibre does not explain it. Ask what else changed.
3. Denier: the number that sells quotes and explains little
Denier measures yarn thickness, not fabric quality. A 600D polyester uses thicker yarn than a 210D nylon; that tells you nothing on its own about which fabric survives longer. Weave density, coating and fibre type all matter as much.

Denier measures yarn thickness, not fabric quality. Ask for fabric weight in g/m² alongside it.
The practical rule: specify heavy denier only where a pack actually wears — base panel, front face, strap undersides — and take the weight and cost out everywhere else. Mixed-denier construction is a sign of a factory that has thought about the product, not a cost cut. We tested the denier question directly in 600D vs 900D polyester, to failure.
4. Abrasion: where nylon earns the money

No primary Cordura datasheet or independent lab report could be located. Treat the ranking as reliable and the magnitudes as approximate.
Under Martindale testing, coated 600D polyester is generally quoted at 10,000–20,000 cycles and Cordura 500D nylon at 50,000–70,000 — roughly three to four times the life on the one failure mode that actually ends most packs. One independent-ish comparison run to SATRA TM31 at 25,600 cycles found 600D polyester showing "moderate abrasion" where 500D and 1050D nylon showed "very slight abrasion."
Honest limitation: we could not find a single primary lab report or any Cordura technical datasheet behind these numbers. Every abrasion figure in circulation traces back to a fabric supplier's own marketing page. We could also find no published Wyzenbeek, ASTM D4157 or tear-strength figures comparing these fabrics at all. Treat the ranking as reliable and the magnitudes as approximate — and if abrasion is genuinely your failure mode, commission your own Martindale test on the two candidate fabrics rather than trusting anybody's chart, including ours.
5. Moisture, and the UV claim we got wrong

The UV strength figures contradict the common claim that polyester is the more UV-stable fibre. Colour fastness and structural life are two different questions.
On moisture the conventional wisdom holds and is properly sourced. Under ISO 139 conditions, polyester's moisture regain is 0.4% against nylon's 3.5–4.5% — nylon takes up roughly ten times more water. In a bag that means a nylon shell gets heavier in rain and dries more slowly, which is why the coating matters more on nylon than the fibre choice suggests.
Second correction. This guide previously said polyester "resists UV fading" better than nylon. That is the standard line in backpack content and we repeated it. A 208-day outdoor exposure study published by SlingFin found the opposite: a 20D polyester dropped to 14% of its original tensile strength after 104 days, and a 300D solution-dyed polyester lost about 75% of its strength at 132 days, while a 10D nylon 66 lost roughly 35–37% over the same period. Their conclusion was that polyester is not necessarily more UV-resistant than comparable-weight nylon.
The nuance worth keeping: polyester holds colour in sunlight better, and it is dyed differently, so "fading" and "strength loss" are two different questions. But if your programme lives outdoors and structural life is what matters, do not assume polyester is the safe choice on UV. Webbing behaves differently again — nylon webbing is reported to lose 50–60% of strength over 36 months against roughly 30% for polyester in the first year before stabilising.
6. The recycled question, and why it is getting easier
The recycled polyester premium has been falling steadily: roughly 40% in 2021, 30% in 2022, 24% in 2023, 19% in 2024, and around 13–18% in 2025. On orders above 500 tonnes it drops to 8–12%. On a finished 25-litre bag, a 15% premium on 0.6 kg of fibre is around $0.09.
Recycled nylon is a different picture. Supply is tighter, it is largely regenerated from fishing nets and industrial waste, and the price gap is wider — recycled nylon linings are quoted at roughly $5–10 a yard against $3–6 for virgin. Aquafil, which makes ECONYL, does not publish an explicit premium over virgin nylon.
What this means for you: if your 2026 programme needs a credible certified recycled story at volume, rPET remains much the easier path — and it is cheaper than it has been at any point in the last five years. Ask for the GRS or RCS transaction certificate for your specific lot, not a general mill certificate. Our GRS-certified range quotes certificate numbers for exactly this reason.
7. Which one for which programme

Or mix them: a nylon base and front panel over a recycled polyester body puts the durability where packs actually fail.
Most of the strongest specifications we quote are not one fibre or the other. A 500D nylon base and front panel over a 600D recycled polyester body, with nylon webbing straps, puts abrasion resistance exactly where packs fail and cost control everywhere else. It also gives you a defensible recycled-content percentage without compromising the wear surfaces.
8. Five questions before you sign the PO
- Is the denier on a mill certificate or just on the quote? Ask for fibre composition and fabric weight in g/m² in writing — g/m² is much harder to fudge than denier.
- What PU coating rating, in millimetres of water column, and tested to which standard? 600–1500 mm covers commuting rain. "Water resistant" on its own means nothing.
- For recycled claims, can you supply the GRS or RCS transaction certificate for my lot? A mill's general certificate is not the same document.
- What Martindale or Wyzenbeek figure do you hold for this exact fabric, and who tested it? If the answer is a supplier brochure, it is a marketing number.
- Are the zips, webbing and lining matched to the shell's durability level? A premium nylon shell over budget components fails at the components. Stainless zips are usually the first thing to go on a cheap bag.
What we could not verify
- No like-for-like nylon and polyester yarn series from one provider across four quarters exists in public. ChemAnalyst publishes a nylon filament yarn page with no dollar figures at all. We used Expert Market Research for the Q1 2026 comparison because it prices both fibres on the same basis in the same quarter, which is the only way a ratio means anything.
- Every abrasion figure here is vendor-published. No primary Cordura datasheet, no third-party lab report, and no Wyzenbeek, ASTM D4157 or tear-strength data for these fabric pairs could be found.
- The fabric-level premium range is wide (+23% to +90%) because it depends on which two products are compared. It is not a single number and we have not pretended it is.
- The 0.6 kg of fabric per 25-litre bag is our assumption, and fibre cost is not fabric cost — weaving, dyeing and coating add materially on top. The finished-bag premium of 8% is therefore a floor, not a ceiling.
- Aquafil publishes no ECONYL price premium over virgin nylon. The recycled-nylon figures here come from small suppliers, not from Aquafil, ICIS or Textile Exchange.
- The claim that nylon prices track crude oil more sharply than polyester is directionally supported but never quantified anywhere we could find. Our own read of the ChemAnalyst series is consistent with it: German caprolactam moved across a 39-point range over four quarters against 18 points for German polyester yarn.
- The rPET premium series comes from one supplier's published comparisons, not an index. Directionally it matches what ICIS has reported about European recycled PET, but it is not independent data.
